Apple revolutionary vision and the iPhone may have met their match with Google’s Nexus One. While Steve Wozniak is not giving up his iPhone he was impressed with the Nexus One he received from Google executive Andy Rubin. Just how do the two phones compare with each other?

You get a 3.7 inch display on the Nexus One compared to iPhone’s 3.5 inch diagonal display. The Nexus One also beats out the iPhone in pixels with 480 x 800 compared to 480 x 320 and 252.15 ppi as opposed to iPhone’s 163 ppi. iPhone capacitive touchscreen is designed to be used with your fingers and has the ability of multi-touch sensing. The Google phone has an illuminated trackball but is capable of multi-touch although this is not the default setting for applications if the US market.

You receive 4 GB of storage with the Nexus One but can expand to 32 GB; the iPhone comes in 16 GB and 32 GB versions. Internal RAM is 512 for the Nexus and 256 for the iPhone 3Gs.

As for the battery with the Nexus One they have a removable 1400mAh battery that lasts for up to 10 hours of talk time, 290 hours on standby and up to five hours browsing time. The iPhone has an internal battery that the user cannot replace. It provides 8 hours of talk time, 250 hours on standby and up to six hours of browsing time.

Both phone offer cameras and the Nexus One beats out the iPhone with 5.0 megapixel autofocus camera compared to the iPhone 3Gs’ 3.2 megapixel camera which has autofocus as well.

The operating system for the Nexus One is Google’s Android 2.1 and is similar in functionality as the iPhone which runs on iPhone OS that is a variant of the Darwin core of Mac OS X.

The Nexus One is 4.7 inches high, 2.35 inches wide and .45 of an inch thick and weight 4.6 ounces with battery. The iPhone is 4.55 inches high, 2.44 inches wide and .48 of an inch thick and weight 4.8 ounces.

Pricing is another innovation that Google is offering with the Nexus One. You are able to purchase the phone for $529, unlocked. Which means you can use it without being contracted with a service provider. If you purchase through T-Mobile you will pay $179 with a two year commitment. Apples iPhone costs $299 or $199 depending upon the model and requires a two year commitment with AT&T. Your total cost for phone usage for the lifetime of the Nexus One would be $529 if you only accessed free wireless LAN networks. With a two-year commitment with T-Mobile your cost would be $2,448.76 compared to $3/799 for iPhone through AT&T.

Google’s Nexus One has a lot to offer and if it’s quality and features live up to this initial showing it may, in fact, be able to successfully compete against the hold that the Apple iPhone has had on the cell phone market for the past several years.

Multimedia cell phones do everything. You can take pictures and videos, play songs and access the internet. You can send and receive e-mail, text messages and communicate through IM systems. Organize your work and life through notes, voice memos, to-do lists and calendar features. Some phone will sync with your PC to keep all your contacts and documents up-to-date.

Multimedia Phone Features:

Camera – 1.3 megapixel cameras are standard with the best phone offering a minimum of 2.0 megapixels. Features may include the ability to pan, zoom, and flash. You can share your photos through e-mail or MMS.

Audio – all multimedia phones will play music. MP3s or another audio file type and syncing with Windows Media Player, Sprint Music, iTunes or V Cast are handled with most phones. You also may have the ability to stream live music from online sites.

Video – most multimedia phones display video and many models can play television programs or even capture video.

Messaging – you can send messages to others through text messaging and IM messaging services.

E-Mail – all good multimedia phones work with IMAP and POP3 providers. Yahoo Mail, Gmail and Hotmail are the most common applications that will work with your multimedia phone.

Internet access – 3G or Wi-Fi connectivity is available on top multimedia phones. You can access web pages and enjoy access to the World Wide Web.

What to Look for When Choosing a Multimedia Phone:

Service Providers – You may want to purchase a phone that is supported by a number of providers. But, if you are satisfied with your service provider you may select a phone that is exclusive to them. Unlocked phones work with any provider and may be a choice to consider.

Multimedia Features – look for high resolution displays. The ability to record and play audio and video files and the ability to play radio and games are features where multimedia phones shine.

Text and Voice Features – include speakerphones, voice dialing, three way calling, placing calls on hold and text messaging. The best phones are compatible with various networks like quad-band and 3G.

Productivity Features – while they will not replace your work phone they are more practical if you are able to use their features to benefit your work life. Third party applications allow you to access your networks at work. Most multimedia phones offer calendar, memo and task lists as well as Windows Mobile Office.

Technical Features – look for phones that provide the functionality you are looking for in a streamlined case. Lots of memory and a long lasting battery will ensure you do not run out of space for your files, documents, music and video and that you can listen and call for hours. Expansion slots to increase your memory is offered on most multimedia phones. Bluetooth allows you to wirelessly listen to calls or music through a variety of outputs.

Price and Package Options – look for a pricing plan that is flexible, avoiding long term contracts when possible if you choose to change phones or find a plan that works better for you.

These devices can interconnect with each other when the devices are within the connectivity range. Bluejacking refers to transmission of unsolicited messages to other bluetooth devices in the network. When you enter into a bluetooth network, you may find more than one device to pair with. Many times, you may not know who have paired with your device. Under such circumstances, people may send you messages and this is called bluejacking. Generally, text messages are only sent, but modern day mobile phones allow sending of images as well as sounds using bluetooth.

You may think that bluejacking is related to hijacking your bluetooth device. But, it is not true. Bluejacking is harmless as long as no one sends you any virus or malicious code that can damage your mobile device. Generally, socially active people use bluejacking to send flirting messages to make more friends. In most of the cases, you may receive a friendship message or business card. Now, several advertisers use bluejacking to advertise their products. As people will be carrying their mobile devices with them, it becomes easier for the advertisers to contact people through bluejacking.

Many people don’t even recognize that some messages they receive are originated by bluejacking. When they receive some business card, they think that their phone is malfunctioning. You can ignore messages sent through bluejacking. Mobile device users consider bluejacking similar to spamming. Just like spammers, you can ignore people sending you unsolicited messages. In bluetooth technology, it is not possible to identify the device which originated the message. When you are in a network of several bluetooth devices, you will never know the sender of the message. Bluejacking has nothing to do with your service provider and you won’t be charged anything for sending and receiving files using bluetooth.

Several bluejacking software and tools are now developed by individual developers. These tools are aimed at very specific functions. Some tools help you identify invisible devices and there are tools available for bluebugging as well. These sinister tools are not generally known to common men and they are kept as trade secrets by spammers. Sometimes, these people send viruses and Trojans resulting in take over of the whole device.

As there are possibilities to receive harmful messages through bluejacking, you have to know how to prevent bluejacking. The most straight forward way is to switch off bluetooth connectivity when you are in public areas. Enable bluetooth in your mobile device only if you intend to connect with some specific device. If you want to keep bluetooth enabled, but prevent bluejacking, you have to make your device invisible in the network. You can find this option with the bluetooth menu in your device. Modern day mobile devices allow you to accept or reject incoming bluetooth connections. You can use this facility to block spammers from connecting to your device and prevent bluejacking.
